When it comes to success everyone looks for the blueprint; but they forget the passion. Having a burning desire to achieve and succeed is what truly leads to greatness.

Everyone is looking for the "success secrets" -- the mysterious steps that, if followed, will instantly catapult them to superstar status. Elusive as these secrets are, we all pursue them. Why? We are taught from a young age that success is the ultimate goal. As adults, this translates into having a successful family life and succeeding in the workforce. In tough economic times, succeeding at the office means something else...it means survival.

Fear and Uncertainty -- The Antithesis of Success

Corporate downsizing, business restructuring, job phaseouts, these are the words feared universally by employees at all levels. Being the sole surviving manager in a restructured department may be a compliment, but it also places a target squarely on your back that reads, "Fire me if we don't turn this around." With all the fear and uncertainty filling our lives right now how do you get into the mindset to succeed? More importantly, how do you inspire others to work towards success when everyone is so filled with fear.

The first step is to work through these feelings of fear and uncertainty. Until you can think and react from a position of strength it is impossible to succeed. Fear and uncertainty must not live in your mind. Tune out negative influences. This means cutting short conversations that turn south, turning off the television if it gets too depressing and avoiding inflammatory articles in newspapers and online. Fill your mind with positive thoughts and envision the possibilities in life.

Passion -- The Ultimate Secret to Success

Martha Graham was a famous American dance teacher and choreographer. She is known for having said:

“Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion.”

This is so easy to see in the performance arts. When you watch somebody dance and they lack passion, all you see is movement. When you watch somebody who is passionate about their art, they are telling a story with their body. The music, scenery and costumes intensify the experience but it is their passion that captivates you and draws you in.

The same is true in business. Whether you are a salesman or a CEO, passion makes all the difference. Too often you find employees who have become automatons. They punch in and punch out but lack the zeal for their position, maybe even for their life.

When you watch passion in another you are immediately captivated, entranced, mesmerized. If you live and work without passion nothing amazing can happen. Passion and creativity are inextricably connected. Being passionate empowers you to see things in ways that others cannot. When your feel passionately about something you embrace it; you allow yourself the time to study, understand and unravel the intricacies simply because you can’t stop thinking about it.

Passion and fear cannot co-exist. Fear dampens passion like nothing else. If you want the blueprint for success look no further than your own passion.

Remember too that a blueprint is merely a map of the road taken by another. If they don’t follow it with passion, their own personal passion, the blueprint is useless. Dancers dance. Runners run. Leaders lead. Passion makes the ordinary extraordinary. Passion makes the mundane great.

Be passionate ... Exude passion ... Make your life a blueprint for success.
